Brief History

Union Square was founded in 2001 to help large organizations save money by benchmarking and renegotiating telecom agreements. The founders’ skills and experience combined decades of experience negotiating deals for large corporations with a thorough, analytical and fact-based approach.

Since its founding, the firm has expanded its scope of services to include Audit, Optimization and ongoing Telecom Expense Management as well as Sourcing / Procurement. In addition, we have invested significantly in the development of data, models and tools. While the firm has grown in scope and in size, the initial objective is still the same: “To help clients maximize value from their telecommunications providers.” Most engagements result from referrals from existing clients and from alliances with selected partners.

While young, Union Square’s expertise is already recognized in the industry. The firm has been a guest speaker at Law Seminars International forums in Atlanta 2002, Chicago 2003, and Dallas 2004. These events attract telecommunications professionals with corporate, carrier and legal backgrounds. Global top-tier strategy consulting firms also call upon Union Square to provide its unique end-user perspective of the industry.

Company Leadership

Antonius Mathissen – Co-Founder
Antonius Mathissen is a co-founder of Union Square Associates and currently focuses his efforts on the overall company direction and on new business development.

Ton’s background prior to Union Square is in management consulting. For more than 10 years he has assisted major corporations in North America, Europe and the Far East on a variety of senior management issues. The majority of his work has focused on the telecommunications industry. Ton holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Anton Freund – Co-Founder
Anton Freund is a co-founder of Union Square Associates. He currently focuses his efforts on management of major accounts. He also frequently represents Union Square as a guest speaker at various events.

Over more than 25 years of his career prior to Union Square, Tony has held senior management positions in Sourcing and Telecom Procurement at top 5 global banks and insurance companies. Tony holds a BS from Long Island University.

Dobrin Kolev – Principal
Dobrin Kolev is a Vice President and Principal at Union Square Associates. Dobrin provides leadership to the Telecom Expense Management practice and also is responsible for major accounts.

Prior to joining Union Square Associates, Dobrin was a Manager in the Telecom Practice at a global management consulting firm and a co-founder of a B2B company and a Leader of its telecom and IT sourcing group. For the past nine years Dobrin has managed telecom and IT sourcing and outsourcing projects. Dobrin holds a Ph.D. in Economics and Game Theory from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Felix Lau – Account Manager
Felix Lau is a Vice President and Account Manager at Union Square Associates. Felix has worked with companies of all sizes to uncover cost savings in telecom through Audits, Network Optimization and Contract Negotiations. Felix has also managed the implementation of our comprehensive Telecom Expense Management solution.

Previously, he was a management consultant at a B2B company and focused on procurement expense analytics and telecom sourcing. Felix holds a SM from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Donna Tomfohrde – Account Manager

Donna Tomfohrde is a Vice President and Account Manager at Union Square Associates. Since joining Union Square, Donna has successfully led a variety of local and long distance renegotiation efforts for multinational clients.

Before joining Union Square Donna worked at both MCI and AT&T for thirteen years in various sales leadership positions. She led or participated in contract negotiations with many national and global accounts during her tenure with the inter-exchange carriers. Donna earned her MBA from New York University.

Iskra Mirska – Account Manager
Iskra Mirska is a Vice President and Account Manager at Union Square Associates. Her focus is in the area of telecommunications voice and data services procurement.

Prior to joining Union Square Associates, Iskra was a Manager in the Networking Practice of a global management consulting firm. Over the last 8 years she has helped multiple clients across different industries reduce their overall telecom and network infrastructure Cost of Ownership through sourcing and contract negotiations. Iskra holds a Masters of Science in Telecommunications from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Masters of Economics from University of National and World Economy, in Sofia, Bulgaria.
